Jones Neck Point, James River, Near Chester, VA

Jones Neck Point (pictured) is located on Jones Neck on the James River near Chester, VA (see map). It's at the fork of the original river bed and the channel dug after the civil war to reduce shipping times from the tidewater region to Richmond.

This photo attempts to capture the scale of the natural structure, which contained an estimated 10s of thousands of bore holes. It turns out the point is a colony of aggressive-looking flying insect of sorts. We did not stick around long to identify the species.
